MODERN FAMILY PORTRAITURE

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away"

P H I L O S O P H Y

The philosophy behind my portrait style is rooted in my love of visual storytelling. A documentarian by nature, I always seek to create a narrative, to chronicle, to record and to evoke feelings through my lens.

There's a purity to those unscripted, real moments of life - moments that can never be duplicated. There's also a tension within any given moment of time that I really love and thrive on creatively. The possibility of capturing these sparkles of time in a photograph continually challenges and inspires me.

My images have a distinctive reportage style. Instead of using a studio or harsh lights, I prefer to photograph my subjects in beautiful natural light and real-life settings, ideally in black and white. This approach creates a surreal, yet classic beauty in my work that can't be duplicated in a studio. Whether we're creating a portrait in one of the many wonderful locations I have scouted, or in the intimacy of your home, we'll never again have an opportunity to capture these unique moments of time. My clients treasure their one-of-a-kind creations and I believe it's this authentic style and approach to portraiture that sets my work apart and why my clients call me back time and again to document the important moments in their lives. My continual goal and hope with all my portrait work is that it will transcend time and trends and be enjoyed for a lifetime.

While taking a picture involves split-second creative choices, good advance planning is at the heart of every successful portrait. From the moment we begin talking about your portrait to the day of the photo session, a special and important collaboration takes place. I feel so privileged to do work I love every day and be able to use my visual aesthetic and years of experience to bring each of my client's concept to fruition.

In our initial consultation (by phone or in person), we discuss all the pertinent details such as location, props, clothing, timing etc. With such careful advance planning, all you have to do on the day of the photo session is enjoy! My photo sessions are fun affairs, not overly orchestrated or stiff. Sessions with young children are organized like a play date so everyone feels relaxed and has a good time!

As an on-location portrait photographer, I've discovered many interesting and even quirky venues throughout Southeast Asia which I've chosen specifically for their exceptional play of light and form. The participants' age will help determine the appropriate location for your photo session. My clients love working on location because so many are here for a limited time only. As well as being lifetime family mementos, the portraits also become important souvenirs of one-of-a-kind places.

I offer portrait sitting packages shot in digital or on gorgeous medium format black and white negative film. Analog mages are hand-printed on beautiful silver gelatin fiber-based paper by a master printer. There are few if any portrait artists that will make this option available anymore. Analog and traditional printing practices are truly becoming more and more of an artisanal medium. The beautiful results speak for themselves and are not only stunning but completely archival. I offer this special service to my clients because I'm still extremely passionate about working in the film medium and enjoy the hand-crafted artisanal approach that analog photography presents. The final results are truly unique and special.

Also among my many other offerings are beautifully bound photo-story books, photo cards and announcements. I'm also available for consultations about framing and ideas on how to present your photographs in beautifully modern, yet classic ways.
