ABOUT
American portrait and documentary photographer Carolyn O'Neill, is currently based in Southeast Asia and available for privately commissioned portraits and freelance assignments.
Her reportage-style individual and family portraits bring fresh artistic elements to the once-staid field of family portraiture. Her unhurried and creative approach to her subjects combines over 10 years of portrait, documentary and street photography experience throughout the world with an intuitive sense for capturing the unexpected and special moments. Carolyn's solid foundation in traditional processes and the aesthetics of fine art photography has grown into a passion. Mainly self-taught, she's also received extensive training by master printers in fine art darkroom techniques. While Carolyn is firmly grounded in digital age methods, she remains devoted to film and the classical photographic process.
Carolyn's singular blend of aesthetics and enthusiasm for family portraiture clearly resonates with clients. An ever-expanding international client base who return time and again can be attributed to her distinctive abilities in documenting those important moments in family life.
The “Modern Family Portraiture” gallery showcases Carolyn's unique philosophy and style of portraiture.
In addition to her family portraiture, Carolyn is passionately devoted to documentary photography about social and human interest issues - particulary those of women, children and animals. She's chronicled the aftermath of natural disasters and covered other vital topics such as animal rights, child sexual abuse and violence against women. Carolyn's documentary photographs have helped raise awareness of these important issues, providing her subjects and their supporting organizations with material to positively impact future campaigns.
Carolyn's continued commitment to using photography as a tool for raising awareness can be seen in the “Documentary” gallery. She supports Bethune House of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Dog Rescue and Children's Cove of Massachusetts.
Carolyn has exhibited in a solo show in Hong Kong and her photographs have appeared in the South China Morning Post, Bangkok Post, BAMBI Magazine, Positive News, as well as other print and web media.
